The course is around the south end of the island, up the west side then out to sea and back. The exact course may change depending on the weather conditions.
Jetty Island is a nature preserve and has an abundant population of sealife. Of special interest are the sea lions – which can be quite inquisitive of small boats, the exposed coast to the west of the island, and the competition between current and tide in the channel.
Note: original course (2009-2016) was clockwise around Jetty Island.
There will be a 20 minute warm up routine for those who are up for it
The following craft are recommended for this race: open water rowing vessels, surf skis, outriggers, sea kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats.
The following craft are not suitable for this race (due to the risk of swamping in the swells): flat water rowing shells, flatwater kayaks, flatwater or recreational canoes.
